FROM THE MOUTHS OF THOSE WHO LIVED IT...
A LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY AND EXPERIENCES OF PARISHIONERS FROM
ST PETER CLAVER PARISH AND SCHOOL
Last year the Diocese of Savannah (Office of Archives and Records) appointed a Black Catholic
History Advisory Committee from churches in the Diocese to recapture some of the history that
has been lost.
The mission of the Black Catholic History Advisory Committee is to aid the Archives & Records Management Department in telling the Black Catholic experience in the Diocese of Savannah using their own voices. Though several of the churches have closed, those remaining open are participating and some closed are searching for participants.
Several parishioners from St Peter Claver were interviewed, but Monroe Abrams, Carol
Cummings, Alice Bailey, Gwendolyn Booker, and Barbara Clowers are part of the first phase.
Each of these long time parishioners gave an account of their memories and experiences. Some
cradle Catholics and others who came into the church later, but had early experiences in the
school and church.
This first phase of the project we hoped to have completed by November which is Black Catholic
History month.
Interviews will be made available on the Diocesan website. We hope to provide a link from our
website. I will begin the second phase of the project next year. You may contact me in the parish
office @ 478 743 1454 if you are interested in participating in the next phase.
